The fifth day of Navratri, known as Shashthi, is dedicated to Maa Skandamata, the divine mother of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda). This day celebrates the strength of motherhood and the protective power of the Goddess.

Spiritual Significance of Day 5

Maa Skandamata is worshipped as the symbol of courage, wisdom, and motherly compassion. Devotees believe that her blessings remove obstacles, protect families, and bring peace and prosperity to the home.

She is depicted seated on a lion, carrying her son Skanda in her lap — a form that represents power balanced with nurturing love.

Puja Vidhi (Rituals)

The rituals for Maa Skandamata are performed with devotion early in the morning:

  • Morning Preparations: Wake up before sunrise, bathe, and wear fresh, clean clothes.

  • Altar Setup: Place an idol or image of Maa Skandamata on a clean altar. Decorate with lotus flowers, hibiscus, and roses.

  • Offerings: Light a lamp and incense sticks. Offer fruits, milk, and sweets.

  • Mantra Chanting: Recite the Skandamata Stotra and other Durga mantras.

  • Fasting: Many devotees observe a fruit or milk fast, eating only sattvic food.

  • Charity: Donating food, clothes, or essentials to the needy is considered auspicious on this day.

Colour of the Day: Green

Each Navratri day has a symbolic colour. Day 5’s colour is green, representing:

  • Growth & Harmony – bringing stability and peace

  • Prosperity & Positive Energy – reflecting the blessings of the Goddess

Devotees wear green clothing and decorate their homes with green flowers or rangoli to attract divine energy.

Other Traditions

  • Families encourage children to participate in the puja, teaching them mantras and involving them in altar decoration.

  • Many communities organise special bhajan and kirtan sessions, singing hymns in praise of Maa Skandamata.

Message of the Day

Navratri Day 5 reminds devotees of the strength of motherhood and the importance of family unity. By praying with sincerity, wearing green, and performing the rituals, devotees seek blessings for courage, wisdom, and happiness
