In a timely and widely shared statement, former Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal president Naveen Patnaik on Saturday congratulated the youth of India — particularly Gen Z — for securing what he described as a significant “victory” for democracy.

The message came shortly after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tendered his resignation, following intense nationwide protests over alleged paper leaks and irregularities in the NEET examination. “Congratulate the young people of India, especially the Gen Z for this victory,” Patnaik wrote on X.

“Accountability and sensitivity to public opinion are integral values of a strong democracy. Nobody is above the will of the people. Voices of our people, especially of the youth, deserve to be heard. The future of India belongs to the youth. I wish them all the best.”

The statement struck a chord across the country. For days, thousands of students and young aspirants had gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and other protest sites, demanding accountability for repeated examination failures that threatened their futures. Pradhan’s decision to step down is being widely seen as a direct outcome of that sustained public pressure.

Patnaik, who had earlier called for the minister’s resignation citing injuries to student protesters, framed the development as proof that democratic institutions still respond when citizens — especially the young — raise their voices. By focusing on “the will of the people” and the future belonging to the youth, the veteran leader positioned the moment as larger than party politics.

As the dust settles on Pradhan’s exit and discussions begin on systemic reforms, one clear takeaway emerges from Bhubaneswar: in a vibrant democracy, the voices of the youth cannot be ignored. The future, as Naveen Patnaik reminded the nation, truly belongs to them.
