The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislature party meeting was held today at Sankha Bhawan under the chairmanship of Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik.
The meeting reviewed the current political situation in Odisha and decided to strongly raise people’s issues and the failures of the BJP government inside the Assembly.
Addressing the meeting, Naveen Patnaik launched a scathing attack on the 18-month-old BJP regime, saying law and order has completely collapsed in the state and women no longer feel safe. He cited recent incidents of atrocities against women in Keonjhar Sadar (the Chief Minister’s own constituency), Khurda, Baghamari and SCB Medical College in Cuttack as “extremely painful” and proof of the government’s utter failure. “After so many incidents, when will this government wake up from its slumber?” Patnaik asked.

The former Chief Minister expressed deep anguish over rising communal tension in a state long known for peace and harmony. He termed the recent riots in Cuttack during Durga Puja a matter that has “bowed Odisha’s head in shame”.

Patnaik declared that farmers and women are the most distressed sections today. The government has failed to supply fertilisers on time and has stopped loan assistance to Mission Shakti self-help groups. He branded the BJP government as “anti-farmer, anti-women and anti-youth”, pointing out that not a single recruitment examination has been conducted without irregularities since it came to power, creating widespread frustration among the youth.
The BJD will demand answers from the government on law and order, crimes against women, communal incidents, farmer issues, employment scams, ration card cancellations and other burning topics.
Senior leaders also raised specific issues: Deputy Leader of Opposition Prasanna Acharya highlighted problems in paddy procurement in western Odisha, while Kendrapara MLA Ganeswar Behera drew attention to the cancellation of ration cards of poor people.
Chief Whip Pramila Mallik briefed members on the opposition’s strategy in the House and the President’s address scheduled for tomorrow.
