Washington: NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has announced that Earth is expected to see a trio of substantial asteroids pass by in the upcoming days.
Three significant asteroids are on a path that will bring them close to Earth between August 10 and August 12. Despite their varying sizes, they are all anticipated to make a close pass without posing any threat.
The largest asteroid, 2024 KH3, with a width of approximately 610 feet—comparable to the height of a tall building—is predicted to make its nearest approach on August 10. Although it will pass relatively close, at a distance of 5.6 million kilometres from Earth, NASA has deemed this a safe flyby, presenting no danger to our planet.
On the same day, asteroid 2024 PK1 is also set to near Earth. This smaller asteroid, measuring about 110 feet in diameter, will traverse a distance of 6.4 million kilometres. Despite being closer than KH3, it similarly poses no substantial risk.
The third asteroid, 2024 ON2, about the size of an aeroplane at 120 feet in diameter, is expected to make its closest approach on August 12. It will come within 6.8 million kilometres of Earth, but like the others, it is not considered a threat.
NASA, along with other space agencies, continues to track these asteroids. However, all signs indicate that Earth will remain unharmed as these celestial bodies proceed on their space voyage.
