Nandankanan Zoological Park has marked a significant achievement in environmental education and bird conservation with the successful completion of its 200th Sunday Bird Walk, reinforcing its role as a leading centre for nature appreciation and citizen science in the region.
Launched on 6 February 2022 with just two participants, the weekly programme has grown exponentially. The 200th walk attracted 75 enthusiastic birdwatchers and nature lovers, reflecting the initiative’s rising popularity. Over nearly four years of uninterrupted weekly events, the programme has built a dedicated community of more than 600 regular participants, including students, researchers, bird enthusiasts, and families.
One of the most tangible outcomes has been the expansion of the park’s bird diversity records. Before the Sunday Bird Walks began, the Nandankanan Wildlife Sanctuary had documented 168 bird species. Thanks to systematic observations by participants, the checklist has now surpassed 210 species, including rare and migratory visitors such as the Tufted Duck, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Spotted Redshank, Gadwall, and Painted Stork.

The milestone event began with an interactive session on bird behaviour and identification, followed by a guided walk through the sanctuary. Participants later engaged in educational activities, including bird identification through calls and clues, as well as a lively group dumb charades game focused on avian species. Winners received prizes from zoo authorities, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The event concluded with participants—both long-time regulars and first-timers—sharing their experiences, highlighting personal growth in birdwatching skills and a deeper connection to nature.
“Nandankanan’s Sunday Bird Walks exemplify how consistent community involvement can drive conservation awareness and scientific contribution,” a park official noted. The programme has not only enriched public understanding of local biodiversity but also supported ongoing efforts to protect habitats within the sanctuary.
The 200th walk underscores Nandankanan Zoological Park’s enduring commitment to environmental education, bird conservation, and fostering a sense of stewardship among visitors. As the programme continues, it remains a beacon for nature enthusiasts across Odisha and beyond.
