Residents discovered the decomposed body of an unidentified woman inside a sack in a pond near Indira Chhak along National Highway-16 in Basta, Balasore district.

According to reports, pond owner Panchanan Das and his family had leased the pond to a local fisherman. While draining water to catch fish, the fisherman noticed a sack floating in the pond. On opening it, he found the decomposed remains of a woman.

The discovery shocked locals, who immediately informed the Basta police. Officers reached the spot, recovered the sack along with the body, and began an investigation.

Police suspect foul play and are treating the case as a possible murder. However, no details about the woman’s identity have been established yet. Authorities confirmed that forensic teams will assist in the probe to determine the cause of death and identify the victim.
