Nandankanan Zoological Park announced the birth of a baby chimpanzee in Enclosure 60A on 29th December 2024, coinciding with the zoo’s Foundation Day.
The sire, Julu, arrived from Singapore Zoological Park on 16th May 1994, and the dam, Rakhi, was born at Nandankanan on 12th August 2011. The pair mated from 04.05.2024 to 16.05.2024, with the infant born after a gestation period of 218 days.
This birth increases the zoo’s chimpanzee population to eight (2:5:1), marking another milestone in its successful captive breeding program and commitment to conservation.
