Iran signalled its stance ahead of the high-stakes talks with the United States in Islamabad through a symbolic message delivered by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Symbolic Gesture Ahead of Talks
Before departing for Pakistan, Ghalibaf shared a photograph from inside the aircraft carrying Iran’s delegation. The image showed empty seats marked with photographs of schoolchildren who were killed in a missile strike on a school in Minab at the beginning of the conflict.
Referring to the children as his “companions,” Ghalibaf’s message underscored Iran’s perspective on the origins of the conflict and the human cost involved.
Iran has attributed the Minab strike to the United States, while Washington has denied responsibility.
Minab Strike Likely to Shape Discussions
The Minab incident, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 160 people, is expected to be a key issue during the upcoming negotiations. The gesture highlights how humanitarian concerns and narratives are likely to influence the diplomatic process.
Delegation Arrives with Conditions
Upon arrival in Islamabad, Ghalibaf stated that Iran is willing to engage in dialogue but remains cautious about the outcome. He emphasised that past negotiations with the United States have been marked by unmet commitments.
“We have goodwill, but no trust,” he said, pointing to previous instances where discussions did not yield lasting agreements.
Iran has outlined specific preconditions for the talks to proceed, including:
- A ceasefire in Lebanon
- The release of Iranian assets held abroad
High-Level Iranian Delegation
The Iranian delegation includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, along with senior officials from defence and economic sectors. Their presence reflects the strategic importance of the discussions.
Diplomacy and Optics in Modern Conflict
The development highlights how modern geopolitical conflicts extend beyond military engagements to include symbolic messaging and public diplomacy. Visual narratives, such as Ghalibaf’s gesture, play a significant role in shaping international perception and negotiation dynamics.
Outlook
As talks in Islamabad approach, uncertainties remain over whether both sides can bridge their differences. The outcome will depend on how effectively diplomatic efforts address both strategic concerns and humanitarian issues raised during the conflict.
