In a proactive move to safeguard the joyous spirit of New Year 2026, the Odisha Police, under the leadership of DIG Central Range Dr. Satyajit Naik, IPS, has rolled out “Mission Suraksha 2026.”
This ambitious security initiative spans seven key districts—Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Jajpur—aiming for a “Zero-Tolerance, Maximum-Safety” environment as lakhs of devotees and tourists flock to iconic spots.
The operation, described as a “massive security fortress,” integrates elite forces and cutting-edge technology to prevent incidents during the celebrations. With religious hubs like Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri and coastal attractions such as Puri Blue Flag Beach drawing huge crowds, the police have left no stone unturned.
Unprecedented Force Deployment
At the heart of the mission is the mobilization of 150 platoons of police personnel, bolstered by specialized units including the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) for emergency responses, the Special Tactical Unit (STU) for high-risk scenarios, and 179 lifeguards stationed at beaches and water bodies. High-definition CCTV networks and drone surveillance will monitor high-traffic areas like Puri Beach and Kantilo Nilamadhab Temple, ensuring real-time oversight.
Tailored Strategies for Each District
Security measures are customized to address unique challenges in each district. Coastal areas in Puri, Paradeep, and Siali Sea Beach will see 24/7 marine patrolling to enhance safety. Religious sites, including Shri Jagannath Temple, Biraja Temple in Jajpur, and Baldevjee Temple in Kendrapara, will feature specialised crowd management to maintain sanctity and order.
Eco-tourism zones such as Chilika Lake in Khordha and Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara are under heightened vigil to curb public nuisance and protect wildlife. This district-wise “Safety Zones” approach ensures comprehensive coverage without disrupting the festive atmosphere.
Road Safety and Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign
To avert road mishaps, a rigorous “Zero-Drunk Driving” initiative is in place. Round-the-clock checkpoints equipped with breathalysers will target drunken driving and overspeeding. Traffic flow will be optimised through pre-notified one-way routes and designated parking areas near picnic spots. Mobile patrols on highways, including bikes and vans, will provide rapid response for travellers.
Focus on Public Safety and Crime Deterrence
The police have adopted a zero-tolerance stance against antisocial activities. Anti-harassment squads, comprising plainclothes women officers, will prioritise the safety of women and children. A crackdown on narcotics includes vigilance against illegal parties, contraband, and unauthorised liquor sales.
For emergencies, 24/7 help desks and control rooms are operational, handling missing persons reports and medical aid. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities promptly.
In his statement, DIG Dr Satyajit Naik emphasised, “Our primary objective for New Year 2026 is to balance the joy of celebration with the sanctity of law. From the riverfronts of Cuttack to the beaches of Puri, our officers are on the ground to ensure that every citizen feels safe. We appeal to the public to be our partners in safety—celebrate responsibly and respect the law.”
As the countdown to 2026 begins, the Central Range Police calls on residents and visitors to adhere to traffic diversions, avoid risky water activities, and cooperate for a peaceful transition into the new year. This mission not only promises security but also fosters a sense of community responsibility amid the festivities.
