Rourkela is once again hosting international hockey as the Men’s Hockey Pro League begins today at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium.
After nearly a year, the city welcomes top teams including India, Argentina, and Belgium for the prestigious tournament.
The competition will run from February 10 to 15, drawing excitement among sports enthusiasts across Sundargarh and Odisha. Adding to the local pride, five players from Sundargarh district — Amit Rohidas, Amardeep Lakra, Roshan Kujur, Shilanand Lakra, and Nilam Sanjeep Xess — are part of the Indian squad. Their presence has sparked enthusiasm among fans in Rourkela, known as the hockey heartland of India.
On Monday, coaches and captains of the three participating teams addressed a press conference, sharing their expectations and strategies for the upcoming matches. The event highlighted the significance of Rourkela as a global hockey destination, especially after the successful hosting of the Hockey World Cup matches in 2023.
