A Fast Track Special Court in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district, sentenced Jisu alias Jishunath Hembram to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 after convicting him in a rape case.
The 38-year-old convict, a resident of Tiloposi village under Morada police station, raped a woman in September 2022. Police arrested him days later following a written complaint. His trial began on October 4, 2024.
The prosecution proved that Hembram wrongfully restrained the victim under Section 341 IPC, voluntarily caused hurt under Section 323 IPC, and committed rape under Section 376 IPC. Judge SK Nayak, Ad-hoc Additional District and Sessions Judge, Fast Track Special Court under the POCSO Act, pronounced the verdict on January 28, 2026.
The court awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000 under Section 376 IPC, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in default of payment. It also sentenced him to one year under Section 323 IPC and one month under Section 341 IPC. All sentences will run concurrently, except the default sentence for non-payment of the fine. The fine amount, once realised, will be paid to the victim as compensation.
The convict was produced from judicial custody. Special Public Prosecutor MR Pattanayak represented the prosecution, while Advocate Aurobinda Parida and associates defended the accused.
The judgment sends a strong message against sexual violence and reinforces the importance of justice and women’s safety. The court noted that the period already spent in custody would be set off against the sentence.
