In another case of domestic violence, a woman named Bela Purti lost her life after being severely beaten by her husband, Bhagirathi Purti, in the tribal settlement of Chunbhati Plot under Ward 25 in Vyasanagar municipality.

The incident occurred late Saturday evening when Bhagirathi, a daily wage labourer, returned home drunk.

According to police reports, the couple got into a heated argument when Bela objected to her husband’s excessive drinking. The altercation escalated quickly, with Bhagirathi allegedly punching Bela mercilessly before throwing her to the ground and repeatedly kicking her in the stomach and chest in a brutal manner. Left in a semi-conscious state, Bela was rushed to the Jajpur Road Community Health Centre by concerned neighbours, but she succumbed to her injuries there.

Bela was the mother of six children, adding to the tragedy’s impact on the family. The Vyasanagar community, particularly within their tribal group, has expressed outrage and tension over the event. Jajpur Road Police promptly responded to the scene, seized the body for investigation, and arrested Bhagirathi. He is currently in custody for questioning.

The complaint was filed by Bela’s son-in-law, Ram Singh Munda, leading to the registration of Case No. 693/25. A scientific team is conducting a detailed probe, and the body has been sent to the local Danagadi Medical College for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
