A young man died of electrocution in Balasore district of Odisha after touching a flower plant that had been connected to a live wire to prevent theft.
The shocking incident occurred in Sanata under Nilagiri NAC on Friday morning.
According to locals, the victim, identified as Tapas Das, went to pluck flowers for offering to a deity. Unaware of the danger, he touched the flower plant that his neighbour had electrified to stop people from stealing flowers. Tapas received a fatal shock and collapsed instantly.
Residents later spotted his body lying near the plant and immediately informed his family. The family rushed to the site and reported the matter to Nilagiri police.
Police officers arrived promptly and carried out a preliminary investigation. They seized the body and sent it to Nilagiri Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officials confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine responsibility for the incident.
The tragedy has sparked outrage in the locality. Villagers expressed shock over the reckless act of electrifying a plant to prevent theft. They demanded strict action against those responsible for creating such a dangerous situation.
Authorities assured that the investigation would reveal the circumstances leading to the death. Police emphasised that evidence collected from the site and the autopsy report would guide the probe.
The incident cast a pall of gloom over the village, with residents mourning the untimely death of Tapas Das. The case highlighted the risks of unsafe practices and the urgent need for awareness about electrical hazards in rural areas.
