A man allegedly beheaded his wife over suspicions of extramarital affairs in Chakuapal village, under Raibania police limits in Balasore district.
The accused, Chandramohan Patra, had married Jayanti, a woman from nearby Tentula village, nearly 29 years ago. Jayanti had a daughter from her previous marriage, and together the couple raised three daughters and one son. Over time, Chandramohan reportedly grew suspicious of Jayanti’s character, leading to frequent quarrels and emotional distance between them.
On the night of the incident, Jayanti was asleep when Chandramohan allegedly used a sharp weapon to decapitate her. The crime came to light when their eldest daughter, Samita, tried to call her mother but found the phone switched off. Upon returning home, she discovered her mother’s lifeless body on the bed, with her head severed.
Local police, along with the SDPO of Jaleswar, rushed to the scene and initiated an investigation. A scientific team from Balasore has also joined the probe. Chandramohan is currently in police custody, and preliminary reports suggest he acted out of rage and suspicion.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, reigniting concerns about domestic abuse, mental health, and gender-based violence in rural Odisha.
