The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has arrested a man from West Bengal for allegedly making extortion calls and sending threat videos to comedian Kapil Sharma.
The accused, identified as Dilip Choudhary, allegedly demanded 1 crore from the comedian between September 22 and 23, making at least seven threatening calls. Police said Choudhary used the names of gangsters Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar to intimidate Sharma.
The accused was presented before a magistrate and has been remanded to police custody till September 30. Investigators are probing whether Choudhary has any direct links with the gangsters or was misusing their names to extort money.
MNS Issues Warning to Kapil Sharma Show
In a separate development, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has issued a warning to Kapil Sharma’s show The Great Indian Kapil Show after a celebrity guest referred to Mumbai as “Bombay.”
MNS film wing chief Ameya Khopkar took to X (formerly Twitter) urging the show’s team and Bollywood celebrities to respect the official name “Mumbai,” which was formally adopted by the Maharashtra government in 1995 and recognized by the Centre in 1996.
“Even though 30 years have passed since the name change, Bollywood shows, politicians, and anchors continue to say ‘Bombay.’ This is a humble request-cum-warning to use the name Mumbai going forward,” Khopkar wrote.
