Mamata Banerjee intensified her criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party during a public rally in Purulia, ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. Her remarks focused on issues of food choices, cultural identity, and political tensions.

Remarks on Food Choices Spark Debate

Addressing supporters, Banerjee raised concerns about potential restrictions on dietary preferences if the BJP comes to power in the state. She suggested that food habits, including consumption of fish, meat, and eggs, could be affected.

The comments quickly drew attention, as food culture is a significant aspect of identity in West Bengal.

Criticism of Political Opponents

During the rally, Banerjee also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of promoting divisive politics. She alleged that tensions and conflicts are used as tools to gain political advantage.

Additionally, she raised concerns about the treatment of Bengali-speaking communities in other states, calling for unity and protection of cultural identity.

Election Context

The political atmosphere in West Bengal is intensifying as campaigning gains momentum. The state will go to polls in two phases:

  • Phase 1: April 23, 2026
  • Phase 2: April 29, 2026
  • Counting: May 4, 2026

The election is expected to witness a closely contested battle between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP.

Focus on Cultural and Social Issues

Banerjee’s speech highlighted broader themes beyond electoral politics, including cultural practices, social harmony, and inclusivity. These issues are likely to remain central to campaign narratives in the coming weeks.

Conclusion

As the West Bengal elections approach, statements from leaders like Mamata Banerjee are shaping public discourse. With debates around identity, governance, and social cohesion taking centre stage, the upcoming polls are set to be closely watched across the country.
