A postgraduate medical student from the paediatrics department at VSSIMSAR, Burla, attempted suicide late Saturday night by consuming 30 phenobarbitone tablets.
She remains under intensive care, monitored by a multi-specialist team.
Sources confirmed that the student left behind a suicide note accusing a senior paediatrician of prolonged mental harassment. She had been posted under his unit and reportedly faced persistent pressure for over a month.
The incident has sparked serious concern over mental health and workplace culture in medical institutions. The student’s husband, also a doctor, had previously filed complaints with hospital authorities regarding the alleged harassment.
Burla police stated that no formal complaint has been registered yet. They described the matter as internal to the medical institute and assured that an investigation would begin if a complaint is filed.
The suicide note, now in police custody, is expected to reveal more details once verified. Meanwhile, hospital authorities have not issued any official statement.
The student’s condition remains critical, and she is under strict medical supervision. The incident has triggered demands from medical associations and civil society groups for a transparent inquiry and stronger support systems for resident doctors.
