In a display of bipartisan concern, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge spoke with Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the evening of August 20, 2025, to inquire about his health and wish him a speedy recovery.
Patnaik, currently undergoing treatment at SUM Ultimate Medicare in Bhubaneswar due to dehydration, received a similar call earlier in the day from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders expressed their hopes for the 78-year-old leader’s swift return to health, with Modi also advising rest and extending an invitation to meet in Delhi soon.
The outreach from both Kharge and Modi underscores a rare moment of unity across party lines, highlighting Patnaik’s stature as a respected figure in Indian politics. Modi’s call, as confirmed by BJD sources, included a suggestion for Patnaik to take adequate rest, reflecting a personal touch to their conversation. Kharge’s call, made later in the evening, further emphasised the widespread concern for the five-time Odisha CM’s well-being.
Patnaik’s hospitalisation comes amidst a politically charged environment in Odisha, where the BJD has recently transitioned to the opposition after losing power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 state elections. Despite past political differences, with Kharge previously criticising Patnaik and Modi for their alleged alignment, the gestures from both leaders signal a moment of goodwill. The Congress president had earlier accused the BJD and BJP of a “love marriage” to “loot Odisha,” but set aside political rhetoric to focus on Patnaik’s health.
As the BJD leader continues his recovery, the outpouring of support from political heavyweights and the public alike reflects his enduring influence in Odisha and beyond. Patnaik’s legacy as a transformative leader for the state remains evident, with citizens and leaders alike wishing for his quick return to public life.
