A deeply troubling incident has emerged from the Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital, where a family from Komarpalli village under Mathili block has alleged that their newborn daughter was taken by health workers and never returned.
The family has now submitted a written complaint demanding a thorough investigation.
According to the complaint, Adme Padiami, wife of Lachu Kabasi, was admitted to Mathili Health Center due to labor pains and later transferred to Malkangiri District Hospital. On July 18, 2025, she gave birth to a baby girl. Due to Adame’s poor health, her mother-in-law, Bandi Kabasi, was present during the delivery. She claims that after the umbilical cord was cut, female health workers took the crying newborn inside for treatment but never returned her.
After Adame recovered, her husband Lachu inquired about the baby, only to be told that the child had died. When he requested the body, he was allegedly threatened by hospital staff and discharged abruptly. The family remained silent for nearly two months, but Lachu has now come forward, expressing mental trauma and uncertainty over whether his daughter is alive.
The family submitted a formal complaint through the Mathili Community Health Center to the District Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brajabandhu Das. In response, Dr. Das acknowledged the sensitivity of the case and assured that appropriate action will be taken following a proper investigation.
The incident has raised serious questions about hospital protocols and accountability. If the allegations are proven true, it could point to a larger systemic failure. The family, belonging to an economically disadvantaged background, is pleading for justice and transparency.
