Lucknow T20I Abandoned Due to Fog, Fans Question BCCI Scheduling as Emotions Run High

What was expected to be a celebratory evening of international cricket in Lucknow ended in disappointment on Wednesday after the fourth T20I between India and South Africa was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent fog.

Heavy fog at the Ekana Cricket Stadium severely reduced visibility, and despite multiple inspections by match officials, conditions failed to improve. After a delay of more than two hours, the umpires officially called off the match at 9:25 pm IST, triggering visible frustration among thousands of fans who had waited patiently in cold weather.

For many supporters, the cancellation represented more than a missed game. Several fans shared emotional accounts, highlighting the personal sacrifices made to attend the fixture. One spectator said he had sold agricultural produce to afford the tickets, expressing that a refund would not compensate for the lost experience.

Others questioned the decision to schedule a night match in northern India during December, a period known for dense fog and weather-related disruptions.

“Scheduling the match earlier in the day would have made more sense. Refunds don’t matter—we came to watch the Indian team play,” said another supporter.

The disappointment was particularly acute for fans who had travelled long distances. One supporter who journeyed from Agra described the experience as heartbreaking after leaving home early in the morning to attend the match.

As spectators exited the stadium, calls for improved planning grew louder. Several fans urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider hosting evening matches in fog-prone regions during winter or explore alternative venues.

While BCCI regulations allow for ticket refunds when a match is abandoned without play, many fans felt that financial compensation could not replace the emotional value of watching a live international match—especially after investing significant time, effort and resources.

The five-match T20I series will now conclude in Ahmedabad on December 19. However, for cricket fans in Lucknow, the evening will be remembered not for on-field action, but for lingering fog, unanswered questions and a missed opportunity to witness their team in action.
