Odisha’s festive spirit ahead of Dussehra and Durga Puja could face a major setback, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall across several districts of the state.
Weather officials have warned that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around September 25–26, potentially bringing wet conditions just as the Durga Puja celebrations reach their peak.
In the short term, the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning between September 17 and 21. Gusty surface winds of 30–40 kmph are also expected, which could disrupt puja preparations, delay pandal construction, and cause inconvenience for those involved in outdoor activities. Residents have been advised to stay alert, secure temporary structures, and follow safety precautions to avoid accidents.
Despite the looming threat of rain, preparations for Vijaya Dashami — scheduled to be celebrated on October 2 — are in full swing. Across Odisha’s towns and cities, artisans and organizers are working tirelessly to erect pandals and create grand decorations. Local markets are witnessing a festive rush, with shoppers buying new clothes, idols, and decorative items to mark the occasion.
While the possibility of rainfall casts uncertainty over the scale and grandeur of celebrations, devotees remain optimistic that the weather will clear in time to allow a smooth and vibrant Durga Puja. Authorities are closely monitoring weather developments and may issue additional advisories if the system intensifies.
