The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Odisha starting August 12, citing the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
The system is expected to intensify, bringing widespread showers across the state.
According to IMD official Manorama Mohanty, Asika in Ganjam district recorded the highest rainfall of 90 mm in the past 24 hours. The forecast indicates very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Puri, while districts like Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, and Keonjhar are also likely to experience intense showers.
A cyclonic circulation is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal by August 13, which may prolong the rainy spell until August 17. In view of this, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for 20 districts, including Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj.
The weather department has advised residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially as thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely to accompany the rainfall. Low-lying areas may face waterlogging and flash floods, prompting advisories for district administrations to prepare for emergency response.
Citizens are urged to follow official weather updates and stay safe during this period of heightened rainfall activity.
