In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through the global football community, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically died at the age of 28 in a car crash in northern Spain’s Zamora province, just two weeks after his wedding.
Jota was reportedly driving a Lamborghini with his younger brother, Andre Silva (26)—also a professional footballer with FC Penafiel—when the car suffered a blown tyre while overtaking on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, close to the Portuguese border. The vehicle veered off the road, overturned, and caught fire, leading to the deaths of both brothers.
Spanish emergency services confirmed the details:
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received multiple calls about a car on fire following an accident at Km. 65 of the A-52. Medical personnel dispatched to the scene confirmed the deaths of two individuals.”
The route is commonly used by drivers traveling between northern Portugal and the Spanish ports of Santander and Bilbao.
The crash occurred just 11 days after Jota’s wedding to his longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto. The couple, who have three children, had celebrated their marriage in a lavish ceremony, with Jota posting on Instagram calling himself the “luckiest man in the world.”
Jota’s final Instagram post, now flooded with messages of grief, adds a haunting touch to the sudden loss.
