The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert for multiple districts in Odisha, forecasting a prolonged spell of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms lasting through July 17.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are very likely to occur in several districts, including Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Koraput, and Malkangiri, among others.
The forecast highlights intermittent heavy downpours expected to intensify in regions like Nuapada, Balasore, Deogarh, and Kendrapara. From July 11 to 17, Odisha’s varied geography—from coastal belts to hilly interiors—is likely to witness fluctuating weather conditions that pose risks to commuters, farmers, and low-lying settlements.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid areas prone to waterlogging and storm-related hazards. Travellers are advised to check real-time weather updates and exercise caution during peak rainfall periods.
This warning follows weeks of uneven monsoon activity across eastern India. The IMD emphasised the need for early preparedness, especially in districts where severe lightning and gusty winds may cause damage to standing crops and property.
