A shocking incident occurred at the Cinema Ocho theatre in La Plata during the screening of Final Destination: Bloodlines.
In an eerie case of life imitating art, a portion of the theatre ceiling collapsed mid-screening, injuring 29-year-old moviegoer Fiamma Villaverde.
Villaverde, who was at the theatre with her daughter and a friend, was struck by falling debris. Initially, mistaking the loud noise for part of the film, she quickly realised it was real when rubble fell onto her. “It didn’t hit my head because I was slightly leaning over the armrests,” she later recounted. Pieces of the ceiling struck her shoulder, back, knee, and ankle, leaving her shaken by the terrifying experience.
Local reports suggest that heavy rainfall may have contributed to the structural failure. The theatre has yet to release an official statement regarding the accident. Meanwhile, Villaverde is considering legal action against the cinema, citing concerns about safety standards.
Final Destination: Bloodlines, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein, has been making waves at the box office with a global opening of $102 million. However, this incident has cast a dark shadow over its screening experience in Argentina.
Authorities are expected to investigate the theatre’s conditions to determine whether negligence played a role in the collapse. For now, Villaverde remains uncertain about returning to movie theatres anytime soon.
