Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, along with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, has promised stern legal action against Delhi-based content creator Amir Shokeen after a video surfaced online showing him racially abusing and mocking a young man from Tripura.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the Northeast, leading to formal police complaints and triggering a joint probe by the Delhi Police and Tripura Police.
In the viral video, Shokeen is seen making offensive, racially derogatory remarks about the youth’s appearance and regional identity, calling him “Chinese” and mockingly comparing him to pop icon Michael Jackson and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER) and the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police Cyber Cell have been tasked with investigating the matter following complaints lodged by student organizations, including the Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD).
Strongly condemning the incident on social media, Minister Rijiju asserted that the accused will face strict consequences. “This evil man will be punished… Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson,” Rijiju stated.
Facing massive public backlash, Shokeen posted an apology on Instagram, claiming the video was a “scripted comedy performance” involving an acquaintance.
However, political leaders across party lines—including Tripura Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury—have demanded full legal prosecution to ensure an unmistakable precedent against racial harassment.
