A fresh political storm has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress following a controversial remark made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public address in Patna on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The Incident and Political Backlash
The controversy unfolded during the 139th birth anniversary celebrations of Bihar’s first Chief Minister, Shri Krishna Singh, in Patna. When an audience member heckled Kharge by shouting, “Modi kahin nahin jayega” (Modi will not go anywhere), Kharge retorted: “Modi ka baap bhi jayega, baap bhi jayega” (Even his father will go).
The remarks drew sharp criticism from top BJP leaders:
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah condemned the statement on X, accusing Congress of “tearing apart all norms of decorum” and making indecent comments about PM Modi’s late father. Shah asserted that under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress repeatedly resorts to abusive language against the Prime Minister and his family.
- Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal remarked that India is a democracy and not Congress’s “darbaar” where leaders can abuse at will.
- Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Giriraj Singh, and BJP Leaders described the comment as a reflection of “bankrupt thinking” and growing frustration, demanding an apology to the nation.
Congress Defence and Further Accusations
Defending the party chief, Congress Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera stated that the comment was a direct response to deliberate heckling by a BJP worker present at the venue. Khera clarified that Kharge’s reference to “baap” was directed at PM Modi’s ideological parent—the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its chief Mohan Bhagwat—rather than his biological father.
Khera further accused the BJP and RSS of systematically disrespecting Kharge, citing past events such as the controversy surrounding a ‘shuddhikaran’ (purification) ritual conducted in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, following a Congress rally.
During his address, Kharge also took aim at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for joining hands with the NDA, alleging he had abandoned his socialist roots, while questioning the government on unfulfilled economic promises regarding black money.
