Despite a cyclone warning issued by the Meteorological Department and strict safety advisories from the district administration, the festive spirit of Kendrapada’s famous Gajalakshmi Puja remains completely undeterred. Leaving behind all apprehension of adverse weather, the temple town of Tulasikshetra has come alive in celebration as it marks a historic milestone—100 years of Gajalakshmi Puja.

In light of the predicted cyclone and strong winds, the district administration had previously instructed Puja committees to remove temporary arches (torans) and vulnerable structures for public safety. However, the administrative precautions could not dampen the enthusiasm of the faithful. While the police and district administration executed their duties, thousands of devotees poured into the streets to seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.

With Sunday bringing a holiday rush, crowds began swelling at Puja pandals as evening set in. The entire city has been transformed with vibrant decorative lights. Major intersections and iconic pandals—including Old Bus Stand, Badahat, Tinimuhani, and New Bus Stand—are captivating visitors with beautifully crafted idols of Goddess Lakshmi.

Adding to the grandeur of the centenary year, several pandals featured idols adorned with elaborate gold and silver crowns and ornaments (Suna-Chandi Medha). The air resonated with the sacred sounds of conch shells, brass gongs, trumpets, and Vedic chants. Devotees from Kendrapada, nearby rural areas, and neighboring districts arrived with family members to offer prayers and partake in prasad.

For residents and visitors alike, the 100-year legacy carries deep emotional and spiritual significance, backed by a firm belief that Goddess Lakshmi will safeguard the region from all natural calamities. Children, adults, and elderly citizens were seen enthusiastically touring the decorated pandals across the city.

Meanwhile, police administration has deployed extensive security measures to manage crowd movement and traffic flow.

Central Range Inspector General of Police (IG) Dr. Satyajit Naik, IPS, reviewed the security operations, confirming the deployment of 30 platoons of police force across 68 pandals. Puja committees have also posted volunteers to complement police efforts and facilitate orderly darshan.

Despite the weather warnings, Kendrapada’s century-old tradition and unshakeable faith have firmly overshadowed the fear of the impending storm.
