The Karnataka High Court has taken suo moto cognisance of the recent stampede at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory parade. The hearing is scheduled for 2:30 PM today.

The stampede, which occurred on June 4, resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuries to over 33 others. Overcrowding, confusion regarding event timing, and fans attempting to enter the stadium without passes contributed to the chaos. Reports indicate that over 50,000 people gathered within a 1-km radius of the stadium, far exceeding the venue’s capacity of 35,000.

In response, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ordered a magisterial inquiry. Authorities continue to assess the security lapses that led to the tragic incident.
