India embarks on a new chapter in professional sports with the launch of the inaugural Rugby Premier League (RPL), and the Kalinga Black Tigers—one of the league’s founding teams—marked a significant milestone with the unveiling of their official jersey and mascot at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Backed by Hunch Ventures, an investment firm deeply rooted in Odisha, the Kalinga Black Tigers represent more than just a sporting franchise; they embody a broader vision for the state’s development and its recognition on the national stage.
Hunch Ventures has been a consistent pillar in Odisha’s growth through impactful initiatives. Earlier this year, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Startup Odisha in a landmark move to strengthen the region’s startup ecosystem.
With the Kalinga Black Tigers, Hunch Ventures continues its commitment to nurturing talent, celebrating regional identity, and bringing Odisha to the forefront of national conversations.
K.V. Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, officially unveiled the Kalinga Black Tigers’ jersey, marking a proud moment for both the team and the state.
Mr. Rahul Bose, President of Rugby India, expressed the RPL Governing Council’s happiness over the inclusion of a team from Odisha, a state with a rich contribution to Indian Rugby. He highlighted the importance of the state’s involvement in the league.
Karanpal Singh, Founder of Hunch Ventures and team owner, expressed Hunch’s ongoing support for rugby in India. He noted that nearly half of the Women’s National Rugby Team consisted of players from Odisha, who went on to win the silver medal at the Asia Sevens Championship in 2021. Singh also mentioned that the Kalinga Black Tigers (KBT) were named after the black tigers, an indigenous species of Odisha, symbolizing power and agility.
Head Coach Mike Friday spoke about rugby’s rapid global growth, expressing his excitement for the sport’s increasing popularity in India with the launch of the Rugby Premier League.
“The Kalinga Black Tigers combine world-class players like Rosko, Perry, Maurice Harry, and Lucas with talented Indian athletes, creating a powerful and dynamic team,” he said.
