Washington: President Joe Biden on Tuesday launched his reelection bid with a call for Americans to choose him again to save democracy, less than three years after he defeated his predecessor Donald Trump.
Biden, a Democrat, made the announcement in a promotional video.
The 80-year-old president will begin his final campaign after a lifetime in politics from a familiar position of low expectations.
So far, former president Donald Trump is considered to be the strongest Republican candidate for 2024. Trump announced his 2024 presidential bid in November 2022.
“When I ran for President four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America. And we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer,” Biden said in a video announcing his campaign. “I know what I want the answer to be and I think you do too. This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election.” the video was posted on Instagram and Twitter.
If Biden wins the elections, he would continue his streak of being the oldest person to hold the title. He would be 82 on Inauguration Day 2025. Vice President Kamala Harris will be Biden’s running mate again and announced the same on her social media handles.
Biden’s most significant legislative accomplishment, probably is the signing of the Inflation Reduction Act, a sweeping climate and healthcare package.
