The Odisha government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the Malimunda Cricket Stadium in Jharsuguda into an international-standard sports facility, with an estimated investment of Rs 250 crore.
The announcement was made by Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy during the inauguration of a new astroturf hockey ground at H.Kantapali. A globally renowned Australian stadium design firm has been engaged to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The project will commence once the DPR is approved.
Beyond cricket, the upgraded complex will include infrastructure for football, lawn tennis, athletics, and a swimming pool, making it a multi-sport hub. The initiative builds on earlier efforts dating back to 2013-14, when Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) sanctioned initial funds under its CSR program.
While ₹8 crore was spent on land development and access roads, subsequent phases saw additional funding of ₹10.35 crore for the swimming pool and ₹5.34 crore for cricket infrastructure. However, experts have flagged that the current gallery, built at Rs 4 crore, lacks basic amenities and may need to be demolished and rebuilt to meet international standards.
Concerns have also been raised about the stadium’s proximity to the airport, which could restrict the installation of floodlights, potentially limiting the venue’s ability to host day-night matches.
This project marks a significant step in Odisha’s push to enhance sports infrastructure and promote regional development through world-class facilities.
