An unsettling incident unfolded at the Shree Lingaraj Temple in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, when a Japanese tourist allegedly entered the temple’s garbhagriha (inner sanctum), violating strict rules that prohibit non-Hindus from accessing the area.

The tourist, who was visiting Odisha, was accompanied by a local guide, leading to the detention of both individuals by temple authorities and police for questioning.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday morning when the Japanese visitor entered the temple premises. Temple regulations explicitly bar non-Hindus from the inner sanctum to preserve religious traditions. However, the tourist bypassed these restrictions, first entering the main temple area and then attempting to access the garbhagriha. Temple sevayats (servitors) grew suspicious of his behaviour and detained him along with the guide as he tried to proceed further.

Upon interrogation, it was confirmed that the visitor is a Japanese national and not a follower of Hinduism. The episode caused brief tension at the temple, prompting the sevayats to alert the Shree Lingaraj Police, who took custody of the individuals. Police are investigating how the unauthorised entry occurred, including the timing, method, and any possible encouragement from the guide. The local guide remains in detention for further questioning.

Temple authorities have announced that purification rituals will be conducted due to the non-Hindu entry, in line with religious protocols. The Lingaraj Temple administration noted that similar incidents have occurred in the past, and while entry is strictly monitored, such breaches continue to happen despite warning signboards at the gates.

Built in the 11th century, the Lingaraj Temple is renowned for its exquisite Kalinga architecture and attracts devotees and tourists alike. However, entry to the garbhagriha is reserved exclusively for Hindu devotees. Non-Hindu tourists are permitted to view the deity from a designated platform outside the inner sanctum.

This event has raised concerns about the enforcement of rules, with the temple administration and police vowing increased vigilance to prevent future occurrences.
