A tragic incident was reported during the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 in Puri, Odisha, on Thursday after a devotee allegedly died and several others were feared injured amid heavy crowding on Bada Danda, where lakhs had gathered to witness the annual chariot procession.

According to preliminary reports, the devotee became unconscious after reportedly experiencing suffocation while waiting to witness the pulling of the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

Devotee Declared Dead at Hospital

The individual was immediately shifted to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for emergency treatment. However, doctors reportedly declared the devotee dead on arrival.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially released.

Several other devotees who reportedly sustained injuries or experienced health-related issues during the crowd movement are receiving medical attention from emergency response teams deployed at the venue.

Authorities Assess the Situation

Police personnel, disaster response teams and medical staff stationed along the Rath Yatra route responded promptly and are assessing the situation.

Officials are working to manage the crowd and ensure medical assistance reaches those in need. The exact circumstances that led to the incident are yet to be officially confirmed.

Lakhs Gather for the Grand Festival

The incident occurred as lakhs of devotees from across India assembled in Puri to witness the annual journey of the Holy Trinity from the Shree Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.

Despite intermittent heavy rainfall, devotees continued to participate in one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Official Confirmation Awaited

At the time of publication, the administration had not issued an official statement confirming the cause of death or the number of people affected.

Authorities are expected to release further details after completing their assessment. This report will be updated as more official information becomes available.
