In a strategic shift during IPL 2026, Ishan Kishan has decided to step away from wicketkeeping duties while leading Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The move, he explained, has significantly improved communication with his bowlers and enhanced his overall effectiveness as captain.
Kishan, who is currently captaining the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, chose to field in the outfield during the match against Rajasthan Royals. This adjustment allowed him to stay more engaged with players and make quicker tactical decisions.
Why Kishan Made the Change
Speaking after the match, Kishan highlighted that balancing wicketkeeping with leadership responsibilities created communication gaps on the field.
“As a captain, I felt there was some miscommunication. While keeping, you don’t always get enough time to clearly convey plans to your bowlers,” he said.
By moving into the outfield, Kishan was able to interact more frequently with his teammates, discuss bowling strategies in real time, and adjust field placements more effectively.
Not Following the Dhoni Model
While legendary players like MS Dhoni have successfully combined wicketkeeping with captaincy, Kishan acknowledged that each player must adapt based on their own strengths and team needs.
Rather than replicating that model, Kishan has chosen an approach that better suits his communication style and leadership preferences.
Positive Impact on Team Performance
The change appeared to pay off immediately. Kishan’s increased involvement on the field contributed to sharper decision-making and better coordination among bowlers, helping SRH execute their plans more effectively.
He also expressed confidence in continuing this approach:
“Being in the outfield helps me stay connected with the bowlers and set fields accordingly. It worked well, and hopefully we continue this way.”
Leading from the Front with the Bat
Beyond captaincy, Kishan also delivered a strong performance with the bat, scoring a crucial 91 runs. His innings anchored the team after an early setback and reinforced his value as both a leader and a key batter.
He also backed teammates like Abhishek Sharma, emphasizing the importance of allowing aggressive players the freedom to play their natural game.
Looking Ahead
As IPL 2026 progresses, Kishan’s decision highlights a broader evolution in leadership strategies within T20 cricket. By prioritizing clear communication and adaptability, he aims to maximize team performance and maintain SRH’s competitive edge.
