The Odisha government has extended the suspension of internet services in Malkangiri district for the fifth consecutive time, citing security concerns and the need to prevent the spread of misinformation following recent violence linked to a land dispute.
According to officials, the internet shutdown will now remain in force until midnight, even as ground reports indicate a gradual return to normalcy in the affected areas. The precautionary extension follows continuous administrative reviews and assessments of the evolving situation on the ground.
Background: Violence Linked to Land Dispute
The unrest erupted after a woman landowner was allegedly killed in a violent dispute related to sharecropping. The incident sharply escalated tensions between residents of MV-26 and Rakhelguda villages, leading to retaliatory attacks, incidents of arson, and concerns over possible displacement.
To contain the situation, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders and suspended internet services to curb rumours, misinformation, and mobilisation that could worsen the conflict.
Property Damage and Relief Measures
Preliminary assessments by the administration estimate property losses of approximately ₹3.4 crore due to arson and vandalism. Several homes were damaged during the violence.
To ensure transparency and timely assistance, the government has deployed four dedicated assessment teams to conduct a detailed survey of damages across the affected villages.
As part of immediate relief efforts, blankets have already been distributed to impacted families. Officials confirmed that additional cooking materials and essential supplies will be provided shortly to households whose homes were damaged.
High-Level Government Review
Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo visited the violence-affected areas and held discussions with residents from both villages. The meetings focused on de-escalation, rebuilding trust, and fostering dialogue to prevent further conflict.
Following the visit, Singh Deo submitted a comprehensive report to Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, outlining the sequence of events, administrative actions taken, and ongoing challenges. Minister Gokulananda Mallik also accompanied the Deputy Chief Minister during the review process.
Officials said the Chief Minister was briefed on the security situation, relief measures, and long-term peace-building initiatives planned for the region.
Security Remains in Place
Security forces continue to maintain a strong presence in sensitive areas, and authorities said close monitoring will continue to ensure that peace is restored without further incidents. The decision on lifting the internet suspension will be reviewed based on ground conditions and security assessments.
