Odisha is witnessing extreme weather conditions as temperatures soar past 40°C in several interior districts, even as coastal regions brace for Nor’Wester rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of up to 30 km/h and lightning strikes over the next four days.
Record-Breaking Temperatures: On Thursday, Boudh recorded the highest temperature at 42.8°C, followed by Jharsuguda (42.2°C), Sambalpur (42°C), and Hirakud (41.6°C). Several other regions, including Titlagarh, Balangir, Sundargarh, and Anugul, also crossed the 40°C mark, intensifying the scorching heatwave in Odisha’s interior zones.
Relief in Sight? The Nor’Wester showers, triggered by a trough line stretching from West Bengal to Chhattisgarh, are expected to bring temporary relief, particularly in coastal districts like Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Isolated regions in Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Rayagada, and Kalahandi may experience thunderstorms with strong winds.
Precautionary Measures Issued: The regional weather office has urged residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, drink plenty of fluids, and be cautious of lightning strikes in areas under storm warnings. The upcoming weekend storms could disrupt outdoor activities, prompting authorities to issue advisories for safety.
