India and Angola have taken a significant step in deepening their diplomatic and economic relations as Angolan President João Lourenço visited India—marking the first such visit in 38 years.

The historic meeting between President Lourenço and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi resulted in a series of strategic agreements spanning defence, energy, trade, and cultural exchange.

Among the most noteworthy outcomes was India’s $200 million defence credit line, aimed at modernising Angola’s military. Talks also included defence platform repairs, arms supply, and training initiatives for Angolan forces.

India, one of Angola’s largest oil and gas buyers, committed to expanding its energy partnership while also pledging support for Angola’s digital public infrastructure, space technology, and vocational training. Agreements were also reached in diamond processing, fertiliser production, and critical minerals trade, further strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.

In a bid to enhance people-to-people ties, India and Angola will launch a Youth Exchange Program, allowing cultural interactions between the nations’ younger generations. Additionally, Angola has officially joined the International Solar Alliance, reinforcing joint efforts toward sustainable energy.

Both leaders strongly condemned terrorism, reaffirming their commitment to global security. With India-Africa trade reaching $100 billion, India’s engagement with Angola signals growing influence in the African continent’s development and security landscape.

This landmark visit not only celebrates 40 years of India-Angola diplomatic relations but also sets the foundation for a robust and progressive partnership in the years ahead.
