IndiGo Fuel Surcharge Raises Flight Costs Amid Rising Jet Fuel Prices

IndiGo Airlines announced a new fuel surcharge on domestic and international routes starting March 14, citing a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel prices due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The surcharge ranges from Rs 425 to Rs 2,300 depending on the destination. For domestic flights and those within the Indian subcontinent, passengers will pay Rs 425. Flights to the Middle East will carry a Rs 900 surcharge, while services to Southeast Asia, China, Africa, and West Asia will include an additional Rs 1,800. Europe-bound flights will see the highest surcharge at Rs 2,300.

IndiGo explained that jet fuel prices in the region have surged by more than 85 per cent, significantly impacting operating costs. The airline noted that while offsetting the full impact would require a substantial fare increase, it opted for a smaller surcharge to balance customer affordability with financial sustainability.

Air India and Air India Express had already introduced similar surcharges on March 10. Their charges include ₹399 for domestic and SAARC flights, $10 for West Asia, and increased rates for Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and Australia in phased adjustments.

Aviation turbine fuel accounts for a major share of airline expenses, and the sudden spike has forced carriers to adjust pricing strategies. IndiGo stated it regrets the inconvenience to passengers but emphasised the measure was necessary given the operating environment. The airline will continue monitoring fuel prices and make adjustments as required.
