Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s diplomatic initiatives have achieved remarkable success in securing the release of over 10,000 Indian citizens detained in various countries over the past decade.

From high-level interventions to positive bilateral negotiations, these efforts reflect India’s unwavering commitment to its citizens abroad.

A recent highlight of these efforts is the United Arab Emirates granting clemency to 500 Indian prisoners ahead of Ramadan 2025, showcasing the robust India-UAE bilateral relationship. Previous examples include the UAE releasing a total of 2,783 Indian detainees through similar measures and Bahrain’s decision to free 250 prisoners during PM Modi’s visit in 2019.

India’s outreach extends beyond the Gulf region, with significant successes in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, and Kuwait. The release of fishermen and civilians, reduction in death sentences, and general clemencies have been made possible through persistent engagement and PM Modi’s personal rapport with world leaders.

This ongoing commitment underscores India’s growing global diplomatic presence and the government’s resolve to safeguard its citizens’ well-being, regardless of borders.
