An Indian seafarer was killed and 13 others were rescued after an Indian-flagged cargo vessel was struck by an unidentified aerial object off the coast of Oman on Monday, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

The vessel, MSV Al Jusufi, was carrying a 14-member all-Indian crew when it came under attack while navigating regional waters near the Omani coastline.

Casualties and Emergency Evacuation

Following the strike, the Omani Coast Guard launched a prompt rescue operation, successfully evacuating 13 Indian crew members from the damaged vessel.

  • Deceased Identified: One crew member succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the aerial impact. The deceased has been identified as Gandhar Nahim Ajij, a native of Gujarat.
  • Diplomatic & Rescue Response: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated via social media that the Indian Embassy in Oman is coordinating directly with local maritime authorities to provide immediate medical assistance and facilitate the swift repatriation of the surviving crew alongside the mortal remains of the deceased.

Rising Tensions in Arabian Sea Shipping Corridors

Attacks on Indian-flagged commercial vessels remain rare, but maritime security risks have escalated sharply across the West Asian shipping corridors:

  • Rising Indian Casualties: Since hostilities broke out in the region on February 28, 2026, at least 22 Indian nationals—including 14 commercial seafarers—have lost their lives in maritime attacks and regional crossfire.
  • Government Stance: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has previously termed unprovoked strikes on commercial shipping in Omani waters as “unacceptable,” repeatedly calling for international maritime security measures to protect commercial seafarers operating along high-risk transit zones.
