In a major move aimed at strengthening transparency and reducing the possibility of examination irregularities, the Ministry of Railways has decided to conduct all departmental examinations through Computer-Based Tests (CBT).

The decision comes amid growing emphasis on secure and technology-driven examination systems following concerns raised by large-scale irregularities in national-level recruitment and entrance examinations, including the NEET controversy.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Announces Technology-Driven Reforms

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the ministry is accelerating the adoption of digital technologies to modernise recruitment and examination processes across Indian Railways.

According to the minister, the Railways is also planning to expand the use of tablet-based examination systems in various departments to further improve efficiency and transparency.

The initiative is expected to create a more streamlined and technology-enabled recruitment framework while ensuring greater accountability in the examination process.

Focus on Transparency and Fair Recruitment

The transition to Computer-Based Tests is aimed at:

  • Enhancing transparency in examinations
  • Reducing the risk of irregularities and malpractice
  • Improving operational efficiency
  • Ensuring faster processing of recruitment procedures
  • Strengthening trust in the hiring system

Railway officials believe that digital examinations will help maintain uniform standards and provide a more secure testing environment for candidates.

Railways Reports Significant Recruitment Numbers

Highlighting the scale of recruitment undertaken by the organisation, the Railway Minister stated that Indian Railways provided employment to 43,781 candidates during the financial year 2025-26.

The recruitment drive reflects the ministry’s continued efforts to fill vacancies and strengthen workforce capacity across different departments.

Key Recruitment Figures from Previous Financial Year

During the previous financial year, Indian Railways recruited:

Category Number Recruited
Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs) 18,799
Technicians 14,298
Paramedical Staff 1,376

These appointments formed a significant part of the Railways’ broader workforce expansion and operational strengthening strategy.

Digital Examinations to Improve Efficiency

The ministry believes that wider adoption of CBT and tablet-based examinations will not only improve transparency but also make recruitment procedures more organised and efficient.

Officials expect technology-enabled assessments to reduce administrative delays, minimise human intervention, and enhance the overall integrity of the examination process.

Modernisation of Recruitment Systems Continues

The latest decision reflects the Railways’ ongoing focus on digital transformation and administrative reforms. With recruitment activities continuing at a large scale, the ministry aims to leverage technology to ensure fair opportunities for candidates while maintaining high standards of examination security.

As India increasingly adopts digital governance practices, the move is expected to serve as a significant step toward modernising recruitment systems in one of the country’s largest employers.
