In a major escalation of hostilities, the Pakistan military carried out multiple violations of Indian airspace on the intervening night of May 8-9, 2025, targeting military infrastructure across the Western Border.
The violations were accompanied by heavy-calibre weapon fire along the Line of Control (LoC) and a massive drone intrusion along the International Border (IB).
According to Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, the incursion involved 300 to 400 drones at 36 locations from Leh to Sir Creek, with the likely objective of testing India’s air defence systems and gathering intelligence. Indian armed forces responded decisively, neutralising these aerial threats using kinetic and non-kinetic means.

Adding to security concerns, Pakistan failed to close its civil airspace despite launching an unprovoked drone and missile attack on May 7 at 8:30 PM. Officials highlighted Pakistan’s use of civil airliners as shields, putting international flights at risk near the India-Pakistan border.
The situation escalated further with heavy shelling across the LoC, tragically leading to civilian casualties. During the early morning hours of May 7, a shell fired from Pakistan landed just behind Christ School in Poonch, striking the home of two students, both of whom lost their lives, while their parents sustained injuries.
Several priests, nuns, school staff, and local residents sought refuge in an underground hall of the school during the shelling. Fortunately, the school was closed at the time, preventing further casualties. Indian officials have condemned Pakistan’s targeting of places of worship, including Gurdwaras, Convents, and Temples, describing it as a new low in its military aggression.
India strongly refuted Pakistan’s disinformation campaign, which falsely accused the Indian armed forces of attacking Indian cities like Amritsar. India also dismissed Pakistan’s claims of a drone attack on Nankana Sahib Gurudwara, calling them blatant fabrications designed to stir communal discord.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri denounced Pakistan’s assaults on civilian infrastructure, emphasising that India’s response was proportional, adequate, and responsible.
With the situation remaining tense, India has enforced strict airspace closures and strengthened its defence preparedness to counter further escalations.
