India lost 2-3 to Belgium in a rain-affected rescheduled fixture at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, despite a late fightback.
Belgium struck first in the 17th minute when Roman Duvekot capitalised on a turnover and beat goalkeeper Pawan. India thought it had equalised through Dilpreet Singh, but the goal was ruled out for dangerous play, leaving Belgium ahead 1-0 at halftime.
India responded strongly after the break. Abhishek scored in the 33rd minute following a well-constructed attacking move. Belgium regained control late in the third quarter when Nicolas De Kerpel converted a penalty corner. Duvekot added his second goal early in the fourth quarter, punishing another defensive lapse.
India pressed hard in the final stages. Shilanand Lakra pulled one back in the 57th minute from Rabichandra Singh’s cross, setting up a tense finish. Mohit HS produced a crucial save to deny Belgium a fourth goal, but India could not find the equaliser.
Abhishek and Lakra scored for India, while Duvekot’s brace and De Kerpel’s strike proved decisive for Belgium. Goalkeeper Pawan made key saves early in the match, helping India withstand Belgian pressure, but defensive errors cost the team.
India will next face host Malaysia on November 26 at 17:30 IST. The match will be crucial for India’s campaign as the team looks to bounce back from this narrow defeat.
