India has expressed strong concern over the reported demolition of a statue of Lord Vishnu at the Thailand–Cambodia border, describing the act as deeply hurtful to religious sentiments across the world. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged both countries to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic dialogue amid ongoing border tensions.

According to reports, the statue—constructed in 2014—was allegedly demolished by Thai military engineers using heavy machinery earlier this week. The incident occurred in a disputed border area that has witnessed intermittent clashes between Thailand and Cambodia for over two weeks.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that Hindu and Buddhist deities are widely revered throughout the region and represent a shared civilizational and cultural heritage.

“We have seen reports on the demolition of a statue of a Hindu religious deity located in an area affected by the ongoing Thai–Cambodia border dispute. Such acts, irrespective of territorial claims, hurt the sentiments of followers around the world and should not take place,” the spokesperson said.

India emphasized the importance of protecting cultural and religious heritage, particularly in conflict-affected areas. The MEA reiterated its call for both nations to resolve differences through peaceful means, avoid further loss of life, and prevent damage to property and heritage sites.

The demolition sparked widespread outrage after a video of the incident circulated on social media. As of now, Thai authorities have not issued an official response regarding the incident.

Earlier, Cambodia strongly criticized the action, claiming the statue was located within its territory in the An Ses area of Preah Vihear province. A Cambodian provincial spokesperson described the demolition as unjustified and disrespectful.

Border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia first escalated in July 2025. Although a ceasefire was announced following international mediation, hostilities reportedly resumed earlier this month.
