As India prepare to face Pakistan in their high-stakes Asia Cup 2025 encounter, mind games have already begun. Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson stirred debate after calling Mohammad Nawaz “the best spinner in the world,” a claim that sparked responses from fans and experts alike.
Hesson Hails Nawaz as World’s Best
Speaking to the media ahead of the marquee clash, Hesson praised Pakistan’s spin department, calling it their biggest strength.
“The beauty of our side is we’ve got five spinners. We’ve got Mohammad Nawaz, who’s the best spin bowler in the world at the moment, and he’s been ranked that way over the last six months since he came back to the side,” Hesson said.
His remark was seen as a subtle warning to India, who rely heavily on their own spin trio — Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel — for success in subcontinental conditions.
Ryan ten Doeschate’s Calm Response
India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate chose not to engage in verbal sparring, instead offering a measured response during the pre-match press conference.
“Spinners are going to be very important in this competition. If anything, I don’t think the pitches have gripped as much as we anticipated, but spin is a huge part of T20 cricket,” Ten Doeschate said.
“Both teams have quality spin options. We know how we feel about Varun, Axar, and Kuldeep. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and can rank their players however they wish.”
India-Pakistan Clash Amid Controversy
The India-Pakistan encounter, scheduled for Sunday in Dubai, is expected to be a thrilling contest, but it comes against the backdrop of strong criticism and boycott calls in India.
Earlier this year, the Pahalgam terror attack claimed 26 lives, leading India to launch Operation Sindoor against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. Several political leaders and families of victims have publicly opposed the match, calling it “insensitive.”
Despite the outrage, the BCCI has confirmed that India will fulfil its commitments and play the fixture.
Team Combination and Strategy
India began their campaign with a win against UAE, fielding three frontline spinners — Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel — alongside pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube provided balance as all-rounders.
With Pakistan boasting a spin-heavy lineup, the battle between the two spin attacks could be the defining factor in Sunday’s match.
