India’s men’s football team triumphed over host nation Tajikistan with a 2-1 victory at the Central Hisor Stadium in a spirited start to the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup.
This marked India’s first win on foreign soil since November 2023, when they beat Kuwait in World Cup qualifiers.
Under new head coach Khalid Jamil, the Blue Tigers showcased grit and tactical discipline. Defender Anwar Ali opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a header that crossed the goal line despite a defensive effort. The second goal came in the 13th minute, when Sandesh Jhingan capitalized on a rebound after Rahul Bheke’s header drew a save from Tajikistan’s goalkeeper.
Tajikistan responded in the 23rd minute through Shahrom Samiev, and nearly equalized in the second half with a penalty opportunity. However, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s crucial leg save preserved India’s lead.
Jamil’s squad notably excluded veteran Sunil Chhetri and Mohun Bagan Super Giant players, relying instead on a younger lineup. India now prepares to face Iran on September 1, followed by Afghanistan on September 4 in the group stage.
