England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to bat first in the opening ODI against India, aiming to set the tone with a strong batting display.
Brook said the pitch looked good and his side hoped to exploit conditions before spin came into play later. England have opted for a balanced attack with two spinners and three seamers.
India skipper Shubman Gill admitted his team had preferred to bowl first, highlighting the importance of testing combinations ahead of the 2027 World Cup. “It’s great to have the senior players back — Virat Bhai, Rohit Bhai, KL, and Boom. Their experience is massive for us,” Gill said.
The series carries added weight after India’s disappointing T20I run, including a 0‑2 loss to Ireland and a 4‑0 sweep by England, which triggered a BCCI performance review. While an ODI triumph cannot erase those setbacks, it would provide a much‑needed morale boost.
England, buoyed by their T20I dominance, welcome back Joe Root alongside Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethell, forming a formidable batting line‑up despite not playing ODI cricket since January. India, meanwhile, look to restore confidence with their senior stars leading the charge.
