The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bhubaneswar Centre has forecast an increase in fog across Odisha over the next five days, particularly during morning hours.
Several districts are expected to witness dense fog, while others will experience light fog conditions.
According to the forecast, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Cuttack will see light fog on December 24. By December 28, fog will spread to Koraput and other regions, with northern and western Odisha facing a stronger impact. Regional IMD Director Manorama Mahanti stated that dry northerly winds are intensifying the cold wave, allowing fog to persist for longer durations.
In the past 24 hours, ten cities recorded temperatures below 10°C. With a minimum of 6.3°C, Koraput emerged as the coldest location in the state. Dense fog was reported in Rourkela, Phulbani, Sonepur, and Jharsuguda, while Chandbali, Bhawanipatna, Koraput, Bargarh, Paradip, Sambalpur, and Hirakud experienced light fog.
From December 25 onward, the cold wave will intensify, reducing visibility due to fog. Morning road and air traffic may face disruptions. IMD has advised residents to remain cautious and wear warm clothing.
The department further noted that foggy conditions will continue across eastern India for at least a week. Authorities urged citizens to adopt safety measures to cope with the cold and poor visibility.
