The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in multiple districts of Odisha until August 25.
Local administrations have been advised to stay alert for potential flooding, waterlogging, and landslides.
On August 21, seven districts—Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur—were placed under yellow warning for thunderstorms and wind speeds of 30-40 kmph. Localised heavy rain may cause traffic disruptions and affect low-lying areas.
The warning was extended to 18 districts on August 22, including Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and others. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds up to 40 kmph are expected. Light to moderate rain is likely across Odisha due to a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, with heavier rain expected in interior districts.
Recent heavy rainfall has already caused landslides and flooding in southern districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur, submerging roads and bridges and uprooting trees. Local authorities have begun clearance and relief operations.
